India ends month-long successful UNSC presidency with ‘substantive outcomes’

United Nations, Aug 31 (UNI) As India ended its month-long presidency of the UN Security Council, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations TS Tirumurti on Tuesday expressed thanks to all colleagues in the Council for their “tremendous support” to make the Presidency “a success with many substantive outcomes”.
In a tweet, Tirumurti said: “As we wind down our Presidency of UN Security Council, we thank all colleagues in #UNSC for their tremendous support to make our Presidency a success with many substantive outcomes.
“I and @IndiaUNNewYork wish incoming Presidency @irishmissionun
& Amb Geraldine Nason all success.”
Ireland is taking over the presidency for the next month.
On Monday, Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla presided over the UNSC deliberations on the Middle East peace process, in particular the Palestinian issue.
India also “steered” discussions and the adoption of three other important mandate extensions of the UN Security Council on Mali sanctions, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and UNSOM (Somalia).
Shringla said on Monday that each of India’s initiatives during the presidency “were designed to produce, to the extent possible, consensus-based substantive and forward-looking council outcomes”.
“This is a testimony to the constructive and bridging role that India attempted to play during its Presidency,” Shringla said.
Under India’s presidency, the Security Council adopted three press statements on Afghanistan on August 3, 16 and 27 and adopted a resolution on August 30.
India also hosted three high-profile events.
On August 9, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually presided over an open debate on maritime security at the UNSC.
On August 18, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar chaired a high-level open debate on the topic ‘Technology and Peacekeeping’ and on August 19, he chaired a briefing on counter-terrorism .
