New Delhi : India has pledged all possible assistance to Nimisha Priya, a Kerala nurse, who has been sentenced to death in Yemen for the murder of a Yemeni national. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed its support, with spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stating that the government is aware of the situation and is aiding Nimisha’s family as they explore options to challenge the sentence.
Nimisha Priya, hailing from Kollengode, Kerala, was convicted for the death of her Yemeni business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi, following a dispute over financial matters. She was sentenced to death in 2020, and the Yemeni Supreme Judicial Council upheld the verdict in November 2023. The family has been trying to negotiate blood money with the victim’s family, and her mother, Prema Kumari, recently traveled to Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, in a last-ditch effort to save her daughter.
Reports indicate that Yemen’s President Rashad al-Alimi has approved the death sentence, with execution possibly happening within a month. The family and supporters are racing against time to prevent the execution.
