ICU Oxygen Supply Failure in Jalandhar Kills 3
3-minute outage in hospital ICU turns tragic; families protest as patients lose lives….
Punjab In a heartbreaking incident from Jalandhar, Punjab, three patients lost their lives after the oxygen supply in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a local hospital was suddenly disrupted. The tragedy unfolded when the oxygen
plant supplying critical life support to ICU patients faced a three-minute-long technical failure on Sunday evening.
According to hospital staff, the oxygen plant encountered a sudden malfunction around 6:30 PM, cutting off oxygen flow to several patients admitted in the ICU. Despite immediate efforts to restore the supply, the damage had already been done. Within minutes, the condition of critically ill patients deteriorated rapidly, and three of them were declared dead shortly after the oxygen flow resumed.
One of the victims was a 67-year-old heart patient who had been admitted just the day before. His son, who was present at the hospital, said, “We trusted the hospital with my father’s life. We never imagined something like this could happen inside an ICU. They were not even prepared with emergency cylinders.”
The families of the deceased were devastated and enraged. As the news spread, an uproar broke out in the hospital premises. Relatives of the patients gathered outside the ICU, demanding answers and accountability from the hospital management. Tensions escalated quickly, and security personnel had to be called in to manage the situation.
A senior doctor on duty confirmed the incident, saying, “Yes, there was an unexpected drop in the oxygen supply due to a glitch in the central plant. Backup systems were activated immediately, but unfortunately, we lost three patients before full oxygen pressure was restored.”
The hospital administration has initiated an internal investigation into the failure. Preliminary findings suggest that the main oxygen compressor failed, and the alarm system that should have notified the staff of the drop in pressure did not function in time.
Punjab’s Health Minister has ordered a probe into the incident and assured strict action against those found negligent. “This is an extremely serious matter. Lives were lost due to a preventable technical failure. We will not let this go unchecked,” he stated in a press release late Sunday night.
Local authorities have sealed the oxygen plant for technical assessment, and the hospital has been asked to submit detailed maintenance records. A committee of medical experts is being formed to audit the ICU infrastructure and emergency response protocols of the hospital.
This tragic incident has reignited debates around hospital preparedness and accountability, especially when dealing with life-saving systems like oxygen support. For the families affected, however, the damage is irreversible.
As one grieving relative tearfully said, “We came here for treatment, not to collect bodies.”
