HSGMC Observes Black Day at Kurukshetra University
Ex-MP Chandumajra says Majithia’s arrest was wrong; objects to Haryana govt’s poster….
Kurukshetra : The Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) observed a Black Day at Kurukshetra University on Thursday, protesting against what it called the wrongful arrest of former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia. The event saw participation from several Sikh leaders, including former Member of Parliament Prem Singh Chandumajra.
Addressing the gathering, Chandumajra strongly condemned the arrest of Majithia, terming it politically motivated and unjust. “It was not just an arrest, it was a political vendetta. The way Majithia was targeted raises serious questions about the misuse of government machinery,” he said.
The Black Day was also marked by strong objections to a government-issued poster displayed at the university. The poster, released by the Haryana government, reportedly portrayed a historical Sikh event in a manner that HSGMC leaders found disrespectful and inaccurate. The committee demanded that the government withdraw the poster and issue a public clarification.
HSGMC President Baljit Singh Daduwal stated, “This is not just about one person. It’s about protecting the dignity of Sikh leaders and ensuring that political differences are not settled through arrests. The use of distorted imagery in educational institutions is also unacceptable.”
Protesters wore black turbans and armbands, and placards were seen denouncing political interference in religious matters. Some even raised slogans against the alleged attempts to divide Sikh leadership across states.
The HSGMC, which has often been at loggerheads with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), is asserting its influence in Haryana, especially on matters relating to Sikh identity and representation. This protest is being viewed in that context as well.
Meanwhile, the Haryana government has not yet responded to the controversy regarding the poster, but officials have hinted at a possible review. On the other hand, Punjab political circles remain divided on Majithia’s legal troubles, with his party SAD calling it revenge politics.
The event concluded with a symbolic candlelight vigil and a resolution demanding justice for Majithia and the preservation of Sikh heritage.
