MUMBAI: Mumbai was pounded by torrential rain for hours on end on Wednesday, slowing down road traffic but maintaining normal service on suburban trains with only minor delays.

According to civic officials, the weather service has issued an orange signal for the districts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar for Thursday, anticipating severe to very heavy rainfall at some locations.

According to the daily weather forecast released on Wednesday morning, “the weather bureau has predicted heavy rain in Mumbai and the suburbs with the possibility of very heavy rain at isolated places, and the possibility of occasionally strong winds reaching 45-55 kmph in the next 24 hours.”

Since the morning on Wednesday, Mumbai’s island city and suburbs have seen severe downpours during the orange alert.

Between 8 am and 4 pm, Mumbai city received 61.19 mm of rain, while the eastern and western suburbs saw 34.53 mm and 40.68 mm of rain, respectively.

While the island city experienced sporadic heavy showers in the afternoon, the intensity of the rain was greater in the suburbs in the morning.

Several times since the morning, the Andheri subway, an underpass connecting the Andheri and Jogeshwari railway stations, has been blocked for traffic owing to waterlogging, although other parts of the city haven’t experienced any significant flooding during the day.

Although Mumbai’s city and suburbs’ road traffic was slowed down by the heavy rain, officials stated local train and BEST bus service was still operating normally despite some delays.
