Heavy Rain Causes Major Disruption in Rohtak

Haryana : Life in Rohtak came to a near standstill on Friday as heavy rain lashed the city, bringing with it severe waterlogging, traffic jams, and widespread disruption to daily activities. The downpour, which began in the early hours of the morning, continued for several hours, overwhelming the city’s drainage system and leaving large portions of roads submerged under knee-deep water.

Commuters found themselves stranded as vehicles moved at a snail’s pace through flooded streets. Many two-wheeler riders were seen wading through the water to push their stalled bikes, while public transport services faced significant delays. Rickshaw pullers and cab drivers reported a sharp drop in passengers, as residents preferred to stay indoors rather than brave the chaotic conditions outside.

In residential areas, water entered the ground floors of several houses, damaging household goods and making living conditions difficult. Shopkeepers in low-lying market areas complained of losses as rainwater seeped into their stores, forcing them to close earlier than usual. Some even spent the day pumping water out of their premises in an effort to prevent further damage.

The municipal authorities dispatched teams to clear clogged drains and pump out accumulated water, but their efforts were hampered by the continuous rainfall. Officials admitted that the city’s drainage infrastructure is ill-equipped to handle such intense downpours, and called for long-term planning to prevent recurring waterlogging issues during the monsoon season.

For pedestrians, moving through the city became a challenge, as footpaths were either submerged or slippery. Several schools in the city decided to close early, asking parents to collect their children before the rain worsened. In some areas, electricity supply was interrupted as a precautionary measure to prevent short circuits and accidents.

Local residents expressed frustration, pointing out that such scenes have become a regular occurrence every monsoon. Many called for urgent improvements to the drainage network and stricter monitoring of construction activities that block natural water pathways. Social media was flooded with images and videos of inundated streets, stranded vehicles, and children splashing in the rainwater, capturing both the struggle and resilience of the city’s residents.

Health officials also issued advisories, warning people to avoid contact with stagnant water, which could become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and cause waterborne diseases. The district administration assured that sanitation drives would be intensified once the rain subsides to prevent any outbreak.

While the rain brought relief from the humidity and a drop in temperatures, the disruption it caused highlighted the city’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. With the monsoon season still ongoing, residents are bracing for the possibility of more such days in the weeks ahead.
