Rohtak: A shocking case of premeditated murder has come to light from Haryana, where a married woman was allegedly killed by her husband and in-laws, her body buried in a pit three days before they celebrated a wedding in the family. The horrific crime was exposed after neighbors grew suspicious over her sudden disappearance and informed the police.

According to the Rohtak Police, the victim, 25-year-old Sunita (name changed), had been living with her husband and in-laws for the past three years. Tensions had reportedly been escalating in the family due to dowry demands and frequent domestic disputes. Three days before a cousin’s wedding in the household, the accused allegedly forced Sunita into a confrontation that turned fatal. She was strangled and then buried in a pre-dug pit in the backyard.

What makes the crime even more chilling is the family’s behavior after the murder. As per police reports, the very next day the house was decorated, music played, and guests arrived for the wedding celebration — with no trace of remorse or indication of any wrongdoing.

The murder came to light when neighbors, puzzled by Sunita’s absence during the wedding and disturbed by the family’s inconsistent explanations, alerted the police. Upon investigation and questioning, three members of the household began giving conflicting statements. The police then obtained a search warrant, and during a ground scan with the help of forensic teams, discovered the shallow grave.

The body was exhumed and sent for post-mortem, which confirmed strangulation as the cause of death. The husband, along with his mother and one other relative, has been arrested and charged with murder, destruction of evidence, and conspiracy.

Local residents were left stunned by the sheer cold-bloodedness of the act. Social workers and women’s rights activists have demanded a fast-track trial and strict punishment for the accused, calling the case a grim reminder of how dowry-related violence continues to haunt women in parts of India.

Police have assured that they are collecting all necessary evidence and eyewitness accounts to ensure a strong case in court. The investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are likely.
