Haryana In a concerning development, Haryana experienced its second earthquake within 12 hours, leaving residents anxious and alert. Early tremors were reported in Rohtak, followed later by a more noticeable quake centered in Jhajjar. This marks the fifth earthquake in just 20 days, raising questions about the increasing seismic activity in the region.

The first tremor was recorded around midnight in Rohtak, with light shaking felt in nearby areas. By the afternoon, another quake struck Jhajjar, causing panic among residents. Although no major damage has been reported so far, people rushed out of their homes and offices, fearing the worst.

Seismologists have classified this pattern of frequent tremors as unusual but not unprecedented. Haryana, especially the Delhi-NCR belt, lies in Seismic Zone IV, which is considered highly vulnerable to earthquakes. Experts believe these recent quakes might be “foreshocks,” which can sometimes precede a stronger earthquake. However, they also caution that not all clusters of minor quakes lead to a major one.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the latest quake had a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale and occurred at a shallow depth, making the shaking more perceptible. The IMD has advised residents not to panic but to stay prepared and follow basic safety protocols during any tremor.

Locals are understandably worried. Many residents of Rohtak, Jhajjar, and nearby cities like Gurugram and Sonipat shared videos and voice notes on social media, describing how they felt their homes shake and rushed outside with their families. One resident from Jhajjar shared, “This is the second time this month. It’s scary when you’re just going about your day and the ground starts moving.”

The state disaster management authority has been alerted, and mock drills have been planned in schools and public institutions across 12 districts identified as earthquake-sensitive. These include Rohtak, Jhajjar, Gurugram, Sonipat, Faridabad, Panipat, Bhiwani, Hisar, Rewari, Karnal, Jind, and Mahendragarh.

Government officials have urged people not to circulate rumors or false alerts on social media. “We are monitoring the situation and will take all necessary steps to ensure public safety,” said a spokesperson from Haryana’s Disaster Response Cell. For now, the tremors have served as a wake-up call. Families are checking emergency kits, revisiting safety drills, and praying that this uptick in seismic activity doesn’t lead to a bigger disaster.
