Haryana Government Colleges to Introduce New Courses, Expand Seats, and Phase Out Low-Enrolment Subjects for 2026-27 Session
Panchkula: The Haryana government has approved a major academic restructuring in state-run colleges for the 2026–27 academic session, including the introduction of new courses, expansion of seat capacity in existing programs, and discontinuation of subjects with low student enrolment.
According to orders issued by the Higher Education Department, courses across Science, Arts, Commerce, and professional streams will be expanded to enhance academic opportunities for students across the state. At the same time, courses with consistently low enrolment will be phased out.
The additional chief secretary of the Higher Education Department, in an official letter, stated that any course with fewer than 20 students may be discontinued by the concerned college, subject to approval from the respective university. Colleges have also been instructed to obtain mandatory approvals from universities and regulatory bodies such as AICTE before introducing any new program.
New Courses Approved in Key Districts
A wide range of new courses has been approved in colleges across Gurugram, Hisar, Mahendragarh, Rohtak, and Karnal.
In Gurugram, Government College Sector-9 will introduce M.Sc Chemistry and M.Sc Zoology, while the Sector-14 Women’s College will offer Computer Science and M.Sc Botany.
In Hisar, Government College Hisar will start M.Sc Botany, B.A Hindi (Major), and B.Sc Zoology programs. Colleges in Mahendragarh and Narnaul will offer new options including M.Sc Physics, M.A Hindi, M.A Psychology, and B.Sc Mathematics.
Physical Education Introduced in Multiple Colleges
The government has also approved the introduction of Physical Education as a subject in several institutions. Government College Morni and Government College Raipur Rani in Panchkula district will now offer Physical Education. The subject will also be introduced in colleges across Ambala, Jind, Karnal, Kaithal, Fatehabad, and Jhajjar.
Seat Expansion in Popular Courses
Several colleges have received approval to increase seat intake in high-demand courses. Government College Sector-9 Gurugram will add 40 seats in B.Com and 10 seats in M.Com. Similarly, colleges in Jind, Kaithal, and Nuh will see increased intake in B.Sc Life Science and B.A programs.
Courses to Be Discontinued
The government has also decided to discontinue certain subjects due to low enrolment. At Government College for Women Karnal, B.A Punjabi will be discontinued. At Government College for Women Hisar, Sanskrit (Compulsory) and Hindi (Elective) subjects will also be phased out.
The reforms aim to align academic offerings with student demand and improve the overall efficiency of higher education in the state.
