Haryana Family Shocked by ₹1.45 Crore Electricity Bill Error
Head of household suffers heart attack; officials admit technical mistake
Ambala In a shocking incident that left an entire family devastated, a household in Haryana received an electricity bill of ₹1.45 crore, triggering panic and emotional trauma. The unimaginable amount led to a health emergency when the head of the family reportedly suffered a heart attack upon seeing the bill. The family, completely distraught and confused, was advised by locals to approach senior state minister Anil Vij for help.
This unsettling incident occurred in the Ambala district of Haryana. The family, which lives a modest life and barely consumes electricity beyond basic usage, was left stunned when the bill arrived. “We thought it was a printing mistake or some joke, but when we checked the account details, it was real,” said one of the family members.
The situation worsened when the elderly head of the household, upon hearing the amount, collapsed and had to be rushed to the hospital. Doctors later confirmed it as a mild heart attack, triggered by shock and stress. The family claims they approached the local electricity office for clarification but were met with bureaucratic delays and vague explanations.
Adding to their frustration, the concerned Sub Divisional Officer (SDO) reportedly told them, “There has been a mistake. You should go and speak to Anil Vij.” This response only heightened the family’s distress, as they felt tossed between departments with no real solution in sight.
After the incident gained local media attention, the electricity department eventually acknowledged the blunder. An official from the department confirmed it was a “technical error” and assured that corrective measures would be taken immediately. “Yes, it was a mistake in meter reading and system update. The actual bill is only a few hundred rupees. We deeply regret the distress caused to the family,” said the SDO in a formal statement.
Locals in the area have voiced concerns that this is not an isolated case. Many residents have reportedly received inflated bills over the past few months, although none as extreme as ₹1.45 crore. They are demanding that the government set up a verification system to prevent such mishaps in the future.
The emotional impact on the family remains, as they continue to care for the ailing head of the household. “We are poor people. We were scared, hopeless. Who pays ₹1.45 crore? We don’t even earn that in a lifetime,” said the son of the affected man.
This incident has sparked a larger conversation about the state of public services and accountability in utility departments. It has reminded citizens of how deeply administrative errors can affect real lives, especially among the poor and middle class who struggle daily to manage expenses.
