Harshit Rana Released from Team India Squad
Did Not Travel to Birmingham; Was Selected for First Test….
New Delhi : Fast bowler Harshit Rana has been officially released from Team India’s squad ahead of the first Test match in Birmingham. The young pacer, who was recently added to the squad as part of India’s pace bowling arsenal, did not travel with the team to the UK.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the development, stating that Rana has been released for unspecified reasons. While no official injury or disciplinary issue has been cited, sources suggest that the decision may have been based on team strategy and balance.
Harshit Rana was initially included in the squad as a backup fast bowler after a promising performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, where he impressed with his pace and aggression. His selection for the Test squad had come as a surprise to many, considering his limited first-class experience.
Despite being part of the initial traveling contingent, Rana did not board the flight to Birmingham with the rest of the team. Instead, the management has chosen to stick with more experienced pacers like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Mukesh Kumar for the Test series opener.
Team India is set to face England in a five-match Test series starting at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The series is being closely watched as a crucial part of India’s World Test Championship campaign.
The release of Rana, though disappointing for the youngster, doesn’t rule out future opportunities. Cricket experts believe that the 22-year-old Delhi pacer has a bright future ahead and may be considered again based on domestic performances and fitness levels.
Meanwhile, the Indian team has begun its preparations in Birmingham under the leadership of Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid. Net sessions, strategy meetings, and practice games are underway as India gears up for a challenging series on English soil.
The BCCI has not named a replacement for Harshit Rana, indicating that the current squad depth is sufficient for the first Test. It remains to be seen whether he will be considered for the remaining matches of the series or future tours.
