Tension Erupts in Punjab & Haryana High Court as Judge’s Gunman and ASI Engage in Heated Confrontation

Punjab  A dramatic confrontation unfolded within the premises of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday, sparking security concerns and drawing widespread attention. The incident, involving a judge’s gunman and an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), escalated to the point where a pistol was allegedly drawn, leaving court officials and visitors in shock.

According to eyewitnesses and official accounts, the altercation occurred in the secure zone of the High Court. Tensions rose when the ASI, who was on duty, reportedly entered into an argument with the gunman assigned to one of the sitting judges. While the details of the initial trigger remain somewhat unclear, both parties have blamed each other for the escalation.

A senior court officer claimed that the judge’s gunman, in an apparent show of aggression, pulled out his service pistol during the confrontation. “It was a matter of seconds, but it was serious. He pointed the pistol in a threatening manner. That should never happen inside a high-security courtroom environment,” the official said.

The ASI, however, has given a different version of the events. Speaking to reporters, he said, “The gunman misbehaved with me without any provocation. I was doing my duty when he began shouting and trying to intimidate me. I never expected such behavior, especially in such a sensitive place.”

The situation was brought under control swiftly as other security personnel and court officials intervened. No injuries were reported, and no shots were fired, but the incident has led to raised eyebrows over internal security management within the court complex.

The matter has now reached the higher authorities. Both the Punjab Police and Chandigarh Police have begun an internal inquiry into the behavior of the involved personnel. “Such behavior is completely unacceptable, especially in a judicial institution that demands discipline and order,” said a senior police officer. “We are reviewing CCTV footage and questioning witnesses.”

Legal experts and court staff expressed concern over the growing instances of altercations involving security staff within the court premises. “This is not just a disciplinary matter—it’s about safety. What if someone had been hurt?” questioned a member of the High Court Bar Association.

Many have also emphasized the need for better behavioral training and protocol awareness among security forces deployed at sensitive locations. The incident has brought to light the fragile balance between authority and conduct, especially in places that are expected to uphold the highest standards of justice and decorum.

As the probe continues, the focus remains on ensuring that such lapses are not repeated and that the sanctity of judicial institutions is preserved. While no formal charges have been filed yet, disciplinary action is expected soon after the inquiry concludes.
