Goalkeeper Savita’s village Jodhkan celebrates Hockey Team’s victory
Sirsa, Aug 2 (UNI) Indian Women Hockey team member Savita Punia’s village Jodhkan erupted in celebration as the team stunned Australia 1-0 in quarter finals and qualified for the first-ever Olympic Games semi-final on Monday.
Savita’s father Mahendra Singh Punia, mother Lilawati, grandmother Uma Devi, brother Ashok, sister Kiran & Manju and nephew Ravi Singh witnessed the live telecast of the match here. During the match whenever Savita frustrated Australian team’s efforts to goal, the family rejoiced the moment.
Other villagers also celebrated the Indian women hockey team victory by distributing sweets and sharing pictures on their social media accounts.
Mahendra Singh Punia said that the entire team performed very well. He said that team gained strength when his daughter stopped a penalty.
Congratulatory messages have not stopped since the victory and even people from nearby villages were visiting Savita’s home till evening.
It may be recalled that Savita was part of the team in Rio Olympic Games also and was conferred with Arjuna Award in 2018.
