Global Cardios Conference spotlights innovation in heart, lung transplantation
Over 300 leading cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, pulmonologists and intensivists across India, abroad participate in the conference
Chandigarh: The two-day 16th Global Cardiomersion Conference commenced at Zirakpur on Saturday. Over 300 leading cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, pulmonologists and intensivists across India and abroad are participating in the conference, with this year’s theme of “New frontiers in heart and lung transplantation: Innovation meets inclusion”. On the first day of the conference. The experts from India, USA and Japan set the tone for a high-impact academic exchange.
Dr. Deepak Puri, Global Chairman of Cardiomersion who is organizing the conference, delivered an insightful talk on off-pump revascularization in patients with heart failure following a heart attack.
He also highlighted th
at the most common cause of heart failure is delayed hospital presentation during the critical window period after symptom onset, leading to irreversible myocardial damage and high mortality. Drawing from over two and a half decades of experience operating on high-risk patients, he compared improvements in outcomes across decades and emphasized the importance of optimized medical therapy, timely complete revascularization on a beating heart, meticulous postoperative care, and structured long-term follow-up, said Dr Puri who is also chairman-cardiovascular thoracic surgery at Paras Hospital.
The day opened with an inspiring address by Dr. D.K. Satsangi, former Professor & Head, AIIMS Rishikesh, who spoke on the evolution of heart failure surgery over several decades, highlighting transformative advancements in surgical care.
Among the International faculty, including Dr. Johannes Bonatti from the US, presented robotically assisted LVAD implantation. Dr. Eric Lehr from the US discussed Mitra clip patient selection and Dr. Norihisa Shigemura from Japan highlighted a hybrid, less-invasive lung transplantation approach at UPMC. Dr. David J. Kaczorowski from the USA delivered key insights on heart transplantation with donation after circulatory death.
Indian experts also delivered impactful sessions, including Dr. Manoj Durairaj secretary, SHFT, who simplified the journey of a donor heart. Dr. Jacob Abraham addressed the outcomes and challenges of heart transplantation in India.
The Conference is being supported by national leadership including Dr. Devagourou Velayoudam president, IACTS, Dr. Jabir president SHFT, Dr. James Jacob secretary-IACTS, and Dr. Vijay Kumar, PMC observer, whose presence strengthened academic collaboration. The day 1 concluded with robust dialogue, global participation, and a renewed commitment to advancing heart and lung transplant care.
