French citizens urged to leave Iran
Paris: The French Foreign Ministry is advising French citizens currently staying in Iran to leave the country as soon as possible.
“French nationals passing through Iran are invited to leave the country as soon as possible given the risk of arbitrary detention to which they are exposed,” the foreign ministry said in a Friday advisory.
According to the release, French visitors to Iran, including tourists, are exposed to a high risk of arrest, arbitrary detention and unfair trial.
“In this context, the ability of the French Embassy in Tehran to provide consular protection for nationals arrested or detained in Iran is very limited,” the embassy stressed, adding that “consular visits are not authorized in the case of a Franco-Iranian national, as Iran does not recognize dual nationality.”
Earlier this week, Iranian state media published a video showing a detained French couple purportedly confessing to acting on behalf of the French intelligence services. (UNI/SPUTNIK)
