Kurukshetra: In Kurukshetra, a new form of cyber fraud has emerged, with fraudsters using a tactic known as “digital arrest” to exploit people. The scheme involves cybercriminals making phone calls to their targets, claiming that a complaint has been filed under their name. The fraudsters further intimidate the victims by making them believe that they are involved in a serious legal issue. They often impersonate officials from the police, crime branch, or even the CBI, creating a sense of urgency and fear.

The fraudsters typically convince the victims that they need to pay a sum of money to resolve the fake case, with the assurance that the issue will be taken care of once the payment is made. The victims, terrified by the threat of arrest and legal action, often transfer the demanded money to the fraudsters’ accounts, thinking they are avoiding a criminal case. This practice is known as a “digital arrest.”

Kurukshetra police have issued warnings to the public, advising them to be cautious of such scams. Police Superintendent Varun Singla emphasized the importance of staying calm and not reacting impulsively when confronted with such threats. He recommended that if someone receives such a call, they should inform family and friends immediately and report the incident to the nearest police station. It is crucial not to be intimidated by these fake threats, as legitimate law enforcement officials would not resort to such digital harassment tactics.

The police also stressed that awareness is the best defense against cyber fraud. They urged the public to stay informed about common scams and report any suspicious activity. In case anyone falls victim to digital fraud, the National Cyber Helpline (1930) is available for assistance. Authorities hope that by spreading awareness, they can reduce the incidence of these kinds of cybercrimes in the region.
