New Delhi, Oct 12(UNI) The Delhi Police Crime Branch registered an FIR to investigate allegations of corruption against Tihar jail officers for allegedly helping former Unitech promoters Sanjay Chandra and Ajay Chandra, Delhi Police said on Tuesday.

An FIR under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Indian Penal Code has been registered and investigation has been taken up by the Delhi Police.

The Supreme Court had directed Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana to make an enquiry in the case. Asthana submitted his enquiry report on September 28, based on which the Supreme Court ordered the suspension of jail officers on October 6, and registration of FIR against them.

During enquiry, 32 officials of Tihar jail no. 7 were found to be complicit with Sanjay Chandra and Ajay Chandra in this matter, Delhi Police PRO said.

After going through the enquiry report, the SC granted permission to conduct a full fledged criminal investigation in this case, based on which the crime branch filed an FIR on Tuesday.

Letters have been sent to the Director General of Tihar jail and Home Ministry for further necessary action in this matter, Delhi Police PRO said.

The court took note of the status report filed by the Enforcement Directorate, which highlighted certain facts relating to the manner in which the premises of Central Jail Tihar had been misused by jail inmates Sanjay Chandra and Ajay Chandra, Delhi Police PRO said.

The SC transferred both the brothers from Tihar Jail to Arthur Road Jail and Taloja Central Jail.
