Floods Submerge Villages in Punjab’s Ajnala, Rescue Ops Underway

1

Punjab : The breach of an earthen embankment in the Ramdass area has triggered massive flooding in several villages of Punjab’s Ajnala town. Villages like Gaggomahal, Chahrpur, and Sofian are among the worst hit, with large parts submerged and many residents stranded in their homes.

As floodwaters surged through residential areas, several families were forced to move to rooftops and upper floors for safety. Rescue efforts involving the Indian Army, local police, and the district administration are ongoing to evacuate affected residents.

Religious organisations have stepped in to support stranded individuals by delivering food and essentials through tractor-trolleys. Community kitchens or “langars” are being operated to ensure no one goes hungry during the crisis.

Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney informed the media that relief camps have been established for displaced residents. Additional Deputy Commissioner Amandeep Kaur has been appointed the nodal officer for managing the rescue and relief operations.

Helpline numbers have also been issued to assist flood victims with emergencies or evacuation needs.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament from Amritsar, Gurjit Aujla, visited the flood-hit areas and criticised the ongoing rescue efforts, calling them inadequate in the face of the scale of the disaster.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation, but rising water levels and logistical challenges are hampering quick relief. Residents are being urged to cooperate with rescue teams and follow official instructions closely.
