Fernandez continues sensations, goes past World No 2 Sabalenka to reach final
New York, Sep 10 (UNI/Xinhua) Canadian teenager Leylah Annie Fernandez continued her winning streak and beat world No 2 Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 in the women’s singles semifinals here on Thursday night.
“That’s years and years and years of hard work, and tears and blood, everything, on-court, off-court sacrifices,” Fernandez said after her victory.
“I just wanted to be in the final. I really wanted it. I fought for every point. Aryna fought for the same thing. I don’t know how I got that last point, but I’m glad I did,’ she added.
The unseeded Fernandez, ranked No 73, continues to surprise the world at the US Open. She has now beaten three top five players on route to the champion title, including defending champion Naomi Osaka and fifth-ranked Elina Svitolina.
Fernandez will next play another youngster, Britain’s Emma Raducanu in the Grand Slam final.
