Fazilka, Punjab: The water level of the Sutlej Creek in Fazilka continues to rise, creating a serious flood risk for nearby villages. A section of the dam near Kawawali Bridge showed signs of soil erosion, prompting immediate action by government teams.
Officials and workers spent the night reinforcing the dam using sandbags filled with soil and sand. Continuous monitoring is being conducted, and local villagers are actively assisting authorities in the relief effort.
Situation on the Ground
The rapid flow of water has worsened the situation. Departmental teams rushed to the dam late Monday evening after receiving reports of soil erosion. With the help of machinery and manual labor, sand and soil bags were strategically placed to strengthen the dam. The operation continued through the night.
Authorities stated that 24-hour monitoring is in place. Extra resources have been deployed to areas experiencing high water pressure, ensuring the dam remains intact. Villagers are participating actively, helping fill sandbags to prevent further erosion.
Officials warned that delayed intervention could have put multiple villages at greater risk, emphasizing the importance of timely action.
Current Impact
Approximately 2.65 lakh cusecs of water are being released from the Sutlej, keeping water levels high. Currently, around 25 villages remain affected by flooding, with water flowing over fields and roads.
