Phone hangs after clicking unknown link, two transactions empty account in Dadri…
Dadri : An elderly man in Dadri fell victim to a cyber fraud after clicking on a suspicious link, resulting in the loss of ₹93,000 from his bank account. The incident occurred when the senior citizen received an unsolicited message on his smartphone containing a link. Unaware of the risk, he clicked on it, after which his phone suddenly froze and became unresponsive. Within minutes, two separate transactions were carried out from his bank account, draining a total of ₹93,000.
The victim, whose name has been withheld for privacy, realized something was wrong when he was unable to operate his phone after clicking the link. He approached his bank only to discover that a significant amount had already been deducted without his authorization. The transactions were completed through an unknown payment gateway and no OTP was reportedly received, suggesting the possibility of remote access or a sophisticated phishing attack.
The local police in Dadri have registered a case under cybercrime laws and are currently investigating the matter. Officials suspect that the link could have contained malware or spyware that enabled the fraudsters to take control of the victim’s phone remotely. The cyber cell has forwarded the details to the technical team to trace the digital footprints of the culprits. Initial findings suggest that the link may have been a clone of a government or banking website designed to deceive users.
This incident once again highlights the growing danger of cyber frauds, especially targeting elderly individuals who may not be well-versed with digital safety protocols. Experts recommend avoiding unknown links, keeping phones updated with antivirus software, and enabling transaction alerts. Furthermore, they advise never sharing OTPs, banking credentials, or clicking suspicious links received via SMS or WhatsApp.
The bank has temporarily blocked the victim’s account to prevent further unauthorized activity and is cooperating with the investigation. Officials stated that digital awareness campaigns are needed, especially among vulnerable sections of society, to prevent such incidents in the future.
