Dream Sports Reports 95% Revenue Loss Due to New Online Gaming Law; No Employee Layoffs Planned
Dream11 ends Indian cricket team sponsorship as company shifts focus to portfolio expansion...
New Delhi — Dream Sports, the parent company of popular fantasy gaming platform Dream11, has announced that the recently enacted online gaming law has led to a drastic 95% drop in the group’s revenue. Despite the setback, the company affirmed it will not resort to employee layoffs and will focus on scaling its other portfolio companies.
The new legislation, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, passed by Parliament and now an act after presidential approval, bans all forms of real-money online games while encouraging e-sports and social gaming. The move aims to curb growing issues of addiction, money laundering, and financial fraud linked to online money gaming.
Dream Sports issued a statement stressing its commitment to comply fully with the law. “While this change has resulted in a loss of approximately 95% of our group’s revenue, we remain dedicated to building a leading Indian sports company driven by AI and the creator economy,” the company said.
As part of its recovery plan, Dream Sports will intensify focus on expanding its other businesses — FanCode, DreamSetGo, Dream Game Studios, and Dream Money — aligning with its mission to “Make Sports Better.” The company assured that, as a talent-first organisation, no employee layoffs will occur during this transition.
The new law also impacts Dream11’s role as the title sponsor of the Indian cricket team, a partnership that has now ended. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has begun the process to find a new sponsor.
Following the bill’s passage, several other real-money online gaming platforms like My11Circle, WinZO, Zupee, and PokerBaazi have suspended their real-money operations.
IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently highlighted the serious social and public health issues caused by online money gaming, affirming the government’s focus on promoting the legal segments of e-sports and online social gaming. The upcoming regulatory framework will support these sectors through a dedicated authority that develops programs to encourage growth in these areas.
IT Secretary S Krishnan noted that the forthcoming rules will provide clarity on the promotion and regulation of e-sports and social gaming while establishing the envisaged regulatory authority.
Dream Sports thanked its users, partners, and the broader ecosystem for their support during these challenging times as the company navigates this significant industry shift.
