Diljit’s Chamkila Nominated at SWA Awards
Film shines in Best Story, Screenplay & Dialogue categories; Chamkila known for bold music
Jalandhar Actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh’s film Chamkila has earned notable recognition by securing nominations at the prestigious SWA (Screenwriters Association) Awards. The film has been shortlisted in the categories of Best Story, Best Screenplay, and Best Dialogue—an achievement that underlines the powerful storytelling and strong writing behind the project.
Chamkila, a biographical drama, is based on the life of Punjabi folk singer Amar Singh Chamkila, who was often dubbed the “Elvis of Punjab.” Known for his bold lyrics and dynamic stage presence, Chamkila rose to immense popularity in the 1980s before his tragic death at the age of 27. His songs, many of which touched on themes considered taboo at the time, made him a controversial yet beloved figure in Punjabi music.
Diljit Dosanjh’s performance as Chamkila received widespread appreciation. Audiences and critics alike praised his deep immersion into the role. From the accent to the stage movements, Diljit brought an authenticity that resonated with fans of the late singer. Parineeti Chopra, who played Chamkila’s singing partner and wife Amarjot Kaur, was also appreciated for her performance and singing.
The SWA nominations come as a boost to the film’s creative team. The story, penned with care and detail, takes the viewer through the emotional highs and lows of Chamkila’s life—from his rise to stardom to the threats he faced and ultimately his shocking assassination. The screenplay manages to blend nostalgia, grit, and raw emotion, while the dialogues give a true voice to the socio-political atmosphere of 1980s Punjab.
One of the biggest triumphs of Chamkila is how it avoids glorifying or judging its protagonist. Instead, it presents his complex life with empathy and clarity. The writing does not shy away from highlighting the criticism he faced for his explicit lyrics, while also showing how his music gave voice to the rural youth of Punjab.
The SWA Awards are considered one of the most respected recognitions in the Indian writing community. With nominations in three of its most coveted categories, Chamkila stands alongside some of the finest works in Indian cinema this year.
Diljit, in a recent interview, expressed gratitude for the nomination, saying, “Chamkila’s story is the voice of an era that many tried to forget. It is an honor that his story is now being acknowledged for its honesty and strength.” As the award season rolls on, Chamkila fans and the Punjabi music community await with hope that the film wins at least one of these accolades, solidifying its place as not just a musical biopic, but a culturally significant work.
