1431 – Joan of Arc was executed.
1856 – The first milk quality law in the U.S. was signed by the Governor of Massachusetts prohibiting adulteration of milk.
1959 – The first experimental hovercraft made its first trip. It was designed by Sir Christopher Cockerell and built by Saunders-Roe. The invention was considered initially only for military use, but was released for civilian use in 1959.
1987 – Goa becomes the 25th state of India. Though it was Liberated from the Portugese controle on Dec. 19, 1961.
1998 – Pakistan conducts an underground test in the Kharan Desert. It is reported to be a plutonium device with yield of 20kt.
1999 – India rejects U.N. offer to send a special envoy to defuse Indo-Pak tensions following a war between the two neighbors caused by Pakistani army incursions in Kargil.
2012 -Legendary Indian Grandmaster Vishwanathan Anand wins his fifth World Chess Championship. Five time World Chess Champion and won the Rapid Chamionship twice. He became first Indian GM in 1988, later beaten Vladimir Karmnik, Garry Kasparov and others. (pic credit-www.britannica.com).
2022 – Frontier becomes the world’s fastest supercomputer and first exascale computer, able to perform a quintillion calculations per second, at US’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Born…. 1950 – Paresh Rawal, film actor, comedian, producer and politician. He acted in over 240 films including Woh Chokri, Naam, Shiva, Mohra, Tamanna, Hera Pheri, Phir Hera Pheri, OMG, Roop Ki Rani-Choron Ka Raja, Ram Lakhan, Tiger Zinda Hai etc. He won 2 National Film awards , many entetrtainment industry and State Film awards and Padma Shri. He was elected to Lok Sabha on BJP ticket in 2014.
RIP : –-1606 – Guru Arjan Dev, the 5th Sikh Guru, who was martyred by the mughal king Jehangir for refusing to convert to Islam religion. Guru Arjan Dev compiled the verses of Guru Nanak Dev ji and other saints of the world faiths, in the Adi Granth, now called Guru Granth Saheb, after Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Guru declared to stop appointing new gurus and respect/follow the Adi Granth Saheb as permanent living Guru in future.
1912 – Wilbur Wright, American inventor and aviator, who with his brother Orville, invented the first powered airplane, Flyer, capable of sustained, controlled flight. Wilbur Wright piloted the longest flight that day in the fourth test, fifty-nine seconds in the air and 852 feet. In 1912 Wilbur Wright died after suffering from typhoid fever (pic credit-britannica.com).
2013 – Rituparno Ghosh, an Indian film actor, lyricist, writer and director. Known for Unishe April, Chokhar Bali, Raincoat Ball, Memories in March. “Rituparno’s comparison is only Rituparno. You may have known…. 1. Martial Arts was first created in India. Kalaripattu in Kerala, Lathi Khela in West Bengal, Gatka and Hola Mohalla in Punjab, Kathi Samu are some of the ancient Martial arts of India.
2. In 1991 a Swedish couple named their son as ‘BRFXXCCXXMNPCCCCLLLMMNPPOKVCLMNCKSSQLBB11116’. They said it was pronounced “ALBIN”.
