Dig’vijay Singh: Rename Khel Awards after Narendra Modi
The Khel Ratna award is the highest sporting honour in the nation.
New Delhi, Aug 6 (UNI) Congress Leader Digvijaya Singh on Friday took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over renaming of the Khel Ratna Awards, and said he was “disappointed” that it was not named after the Prime Minister.
Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awards were rechristened as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Awards after the Hockey legend.
“We are disappointed, we thought it would be named Narendra Modi Khel Awards just like he did with Sardar Patel Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad,” Singh said after attending farmers’ protest at Jantar Mantar.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi meanwhile demanded that the name of Narendra Modi stadium be changed to Sardar Patel Stadium. “Major Dhyanchand has inspired many young Indians. Our current Olympic teams will continue bringing the necessary attention to hockey. I hope the Government will also award the Bharat Ratna to Major Dhyanchand and rename Narendra Modi stadium to its original Sardar Patel Stadium,” he said in a tweet.
The decision was announced by the Prime Minister on Twitter, who said he was getting many requests to rename the awards.
“I have been getting many requests from citizens across India to name the Khel Ratna Award after Major Dhyan Chand. I thank them for their views.,” he said.
“Respecting their sentiment, the Khel Ratna Award will hereby be called the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award!”
