New Delhi, May 5: Jammu and Kashmir will henceforth have five Lok Sabha seats, not six, while the Kashmir and Jammu regions will account for 43 and 47 Assembly constituencies respectively. A notification was issued on Thursday which said the Delimitation Commission has finalized 90 Assembly Constituencies for the Union Territory for elections to the Legislative Assembly. Nine of these will be reserved for STs for the first time. It said the 24 seats in the part of Kashmir held by Pakistan were not taken into consideration. The five Lok Sabha constituencies are: Baramulla, Srinagar, Anantnag-Rajouri, Udhampur and Jammu. There were 83 seats earlier in Jammu and Kashmir after Ladakh was carved out. Jammu region had 37 seats and Kashmir 46. Formed in March 2020, the Delimitation Panel was granted a one-year extension last year. In February, it was again given a two-month extension. Its term was to end on Friday. Home Minister Amit Shah has said more than once in Parliament those elections would be held in J&K after the delimitation is done. (UNI)
