Dwarka (Gujarat), Feb 26: Congress has already won the polls in Gujarat, party leader Rahul Gandhi said on Saturday as he addressed a ‘Chintan Shivir’ (contemplation meet) here. The camp, organized ahead of assembly polls which are due in the state later this year, Rahul Gandhi said the party needs to reach out to people with a plan for solving their issues. The Congress leader pointed at a portrait of Mahatma Gandhi on display at the venue, and said, “Our party was born out of Gujarat.” He said while Congress emerged strong in every state of India before independence, and though there were many leaders, the thought and direction to the party was provided by a Gujarati – Mahatma Gandhi. Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi said they have the government, agencies like CBI and ED, and “good clothes”, and pointed at Mahatma Gandhi’s portrait where he was wearing his signature langot, and said, “this is what truth looks like”. The Congress leader said in the last assembly election in Gujarat in 2017, a party leader from the state said they would win 40-45 seats. “When results were declared we lost by seven seats,” he said. In the assembly elections in 2017, BJP won 99 seats and Congress won 77 in the 182-member assembly. Since then, the numbers of Congress have gone down to 64 due to defections and defeat in the by-polls, and BJP has gone up to 112. Rahul Gandhi also said there is a disconnect in Congress between those who speak and those who work. He also said BJP was welcome to take the leaders who sat in air-conditioned rooms and talked, and the Congress needed people who had the party’s ideology in their ‘DNA’. “There’s a disconnect in Congress between those who work and those who speak. There are people who go on ground, fight BJP, face batons. On the other hand, there are people who sit in AC offices, give long speeches,” he said. “We have to show these are the people who work on ground. These are the people who disturb, BJP please take them. Take as many kauravs as you like. We gave them to you, please take them. We want the DNA of Congress. We need only 25-30 people to uproot BJP,” he said, calling upon party workers to identify issues of the people, and to find solutions. He said people did not have a clarity about what Congress is planning to do, and asked party workers to take the message to the people. Earlier, Rahul Gandhi also offered prayers at Dwarkadhish Temple in Dwarka.
