Punjab : Popular Punjabi singer Jasbir Jassi has found himself at the center of controversy after a complaint was filed against him in Delhi over his public support for fellow Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh and Pakistani actress Hania Aamir. The complaint alleges that Jassi’s social media statements supporting the two artists were “anti-national” and “insensitive” given current diplomatic tensions.

The controversy began when Jassi took to his official social media account to extend support to Diljit and Hania amid ongoing criticism over their growing camaraderie online. While many netizens praised their cross-border friendship, others accused them of undermining national sentiments. Jassi, in his post, not only backed the artists but also criticized those who were “unnecessarily creating divisions in art and culture.”

In his statement, Jassi said, “Art has no boundaries. Whether it’s Diljit or Hania, both are artists who have inspired millions. We should not let politics interfere with creativity.” However, his comments were not received well by a section of the public and certain political groups, who interpreted his remarks as dismissive of national concerns.

A formal complaint was lodged at a police station in Delhi by a right-wing outfit. The complainants demanded legal action against the singer, alleging that his statements were disrespectful to India’s policy stance on Pakistan and could incite public unrest.

Police officials confirmed receiving the complaint and said that the matter is under preliminary review. “We have acknowledged the complaint and are evaluating it as per standard procedure. No FIR has been registered yet,” said a senior officer.

Meanwhile, Jasbir Jassi has not issued any clarification or apology after the complaint. Supporters of the artist argue that his statement was in defense of artistic freedom and should not be politicized.

This development has added another layer to the ongoing cultural debate between artistic collaboration and nationalism. Celebrities and public figures from the music and film industry have often been caught in similar storms when commenting on cross-border matters.

Whether or not the complaint leads to formal legal proceedings, the incident has sparked a renewed conversation on freedom of expression, art diplomacy, and the fine line between support and sedition in India’s entertainment world.
