Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Sunday welcomed the enactment of the bill against ‘beadbi’ (sacrilege) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji into law after receiving the Governor’s assent, calling it a “historic moment” and a matter of spiritual gratitude.

In a post on X, CM Mann said the bill passed in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha had now become law after approval from Governor Gulab Chand Kataria. He expressed gratitude to Waheguru and the Sikh Sangat, stating that he felt honoured to be part of this legislative step aimed at protecting religious sanctity.

The legislation, now named the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Satkar Act, 2026, was earlier passed by the Assembly on April 13 during Vaisakhi.

AAP leaders also strongly welcomed the development, calling it a landmark decision for Punjab and the Sikh community worldwide. Cabinet Minister Harjot Singh Bains described it as a “historic and auspicious moment,” saying the law reflects the collective faith and emotions of devotees across communities who revere the Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

Cabinet Minister Baljeet Kaur said the law would act as a strong deterrent against sacrilege attempts and help maintain communal harmony while ensuring strict punishment for offenders.

MLA Inderbir Singh Nijjar termed it a “historic day for Punjab,” noting that the unanimous passage and Governor’s assent reflect strong political will to curb such incidents.

MP Malvinder Singh Kang said the law fulfills a long-standing demand for stringent action against sacrilege and ensures justice for sentiments hurt by such acts.

AAP Punjab Chief Spokesperson and MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal also hailed the move as a proud moment for Sikhs globally, thanking the leadership for turning public sentiment into legislation.

Collectively, AAP leaders said the law sends a strong message that sacrilege will not be tolerated and strengthens efforts to preserve religious dignity and social harmony.
