New Delhi: China expert Naveen Srivastava, presently Additional Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Nepal. The IFS officer of 1993 batch is expected to take up the assignment shortly, an official statement said today. With the previous Ambassador to Nepal Vinay Mohan Kwatra being appointed India’s Foreign Secretary last month, the post of envoy had fallen vacant. The posting of Srivastava, who has been handling the East Asia Desk in the MEA, to Kathmandu in view of his expertise on China would be useful in countering Beijing’s hold over Nepal, especially as India has been stressing on the age-old traditional, historical, cultural and people to people links as a strong binding force between the two nations. PM Modi was in Lumbini yesterday, in his fifth visit to Nepal, where he stressed on the Buddhist links between India and Nepal.
