China Adds 100 Nukes, India Adds Eight

SIPRI 2025 warns of rising nuclear threats….

New Delhi : The latest 2025 report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has sounded alarm bells globally, revealing a sharp increase in nuclear weapons stockpiles, especially in Asia. The report highlights that in just one year, China has added around 100 nuclear warheads, while India increased its arsenal by 8. Pakistan has also maintained a steady pace in expanding its nuclear capabilities, adding to the region’s growing volatility.

This surge in nuclear development is not limited to the Asian region. Across the globe, nations are upgrading and modernizing their arsenals, investing in newer technologies and delivery systems. However, what makes the India-China-Pakistan triangle particularly dangerous is the geographical proximity, history of conflict, and the absence of robust arms control mechanisms.

China’s rapid expansion has pushed its total warhead count to approximately 500, according to the SIPRI report. India now holds about 172 nuclear warheads, while Pakistan possesses around 170. Though these numbers are far lower than those of the United States and Russia, the dynamics in South Asia make even these quantities a significant threat.

The report underscores that nuclear weapons are no longer just tools of deterrence but have become symbols of power and status. Nations are investing heavily in not only maintaining but also upgrading their nuclear capabilities. Tactical nuclear weapons, hypersonic delivery systems, and submarine-launched ballistic missiles are becoming part of this modern race for superiority.

What’s most concerning is the lack of transparency and diplomatic engagement. Unlike the Cold War era when treaties like START and INF were in place, the modern world lacks comprehensive global nuclear disarmament frameworks. SIPRI’s 2025 findings warn that the unchecked growth of arsenals, combined with political tensions and communication breakdowns, could lead to miscalculations or accidental launches.

India and Pakistan, with their long-standing rivalry, are already in a fragile balance. Any escalation could have catastrophic consequences not only for South Asia but for the entire world. The report concludes by urging global leaders to revive diplomatic dialogues, recommit to disarmament goals, and strengthen non-proliferation regimes before the world slips into a new and more dangerous nuclear age.
