Chandigarh : is all set to see a major boost in its railway infrastructure with the upcoming development of a world-class railway station. Following the station’s upgrade, more trains are expected to be added to improve connectivity, benefitting thousands of daily passengers. An investment of ₹10 crore has been approved for the project, with special focus on enhancing services and operational capacity.

The redevelopment plan includes modern amenities, smart digital displays, energy-efficient structures, better waiting areas, and improved sanitation facilities. Alongside this, a detailed layout for expanding the maintenance yard has also been approved. The expansion of the yard will allow for smoother maintenance of additional trains, ensuring timely operations and better passenger experience.

Railway officials have confirmed that once the new infrastructure is in place, train frequency to and from Chandigarh will gradually increase. This will ease travel pressure on neighboring stations like Ambala and Kalka and provide direct benefits to commuters traveling towards Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.

The decision to expand the yard and station facilities comes after consistent demands from the public and local representatives for improved train services and infrastructure. The revamped station will also be better equipped to handle long-distance express trains, tourist trains, and special festival trains, which currently face scheduling challenges due to limited maintenance capacity.

Urban planners and transport experts believe the redevelopment will have a ripple effect on the city’s economy. With enhanced railway connectivity, Chandigarh is expected to attract more tourists, facilitate easier movement for business professionals, and offer better logistics support for trade and cargo movement.

The project aligns with the broader vision of Indian Railways to modernize stations across the country and offer airport-like experiences to passengers. Work on the expansion is expected to begin soon, with the first phase focusing on structural improvements and yard modernization.

As the city prepares for this transformative change, hopes are high that Chandigarh will soon emerge as a major railway hub in North India, offering faster, more reliable, and more comfortable rail journeys for all.
