Chandigarh: An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) from Chandigarh has been granted bail after being caught red-handed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) while allegedly accepting a bribe. The ASI was apprehended in connection with a cheque bounce case, where he reportedly demanded a total of ₹1.5 lakh and was caught accepting ₹54,000 as the first installment.

The incident has raised serious concerns about corruption within the police department. According to CBI officials, the complainant had approached them after the ASI persistently demanded money in return for a favorable action in the cheque bounce case. The CBI laid a trap and arrested the ASI at the moment he received ₹54,000 in cash from the complainant.

Following the arrest, the accused was produced before the special CBI court in Chandigarh. After hearing the arguments from both sides, the court granted him bail under specific conditions. The CBI is continuing its investigation to gather more evidence and determine whether any other officials were involved in the bribery demand.

Sources reveal that the ASI had allegedly used his position to pressure the complainant, misusing the provisions of the law to extract money. This misuse of power by a law enforcement officer has sparked public criticism and calls for stricter actions against corrupt officials.

Legal experts have pointed out that while bail has been granted, the ASI will still face a full trial, and the case could serve as a benchmark for holding public servants accountable. Meanwhile, the CBI has reaffirmed its commitment to rooting out corruption at all levels, encouraging citizens to report such incidents without fear.

The case has also prompted the Chandigarh Police to internally review its procedures and monitor staff conduct more closely to prevent similar cases in the future. The outcome of the ongoing investigation could lead to disciplinary action, including suspension or dismissal from service if the ASI is found guilty.
