Chandigarh : An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) posted in Chandigarh has been granted bail after being caught red-handed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a bribery case. The ASI was arrested while accepting a bribe of ₹54,000, which was allegedly part of a larger demand of ₹1.5 lakh in connection with a cheque bounce case. The arrest took place following a complaint filed with the CBI that led to a trap being set to catch the officer in the act. The accused, whose name has not been officially released, was handling a financial dispute case where the complainant had been facing pressure to pay bribe money for favorable treatment or resolution.

The CBI acted swiftly after verifying the allegations through a preliminary inquiry. Following standard procedure, a decoy operation was conducted in which the complainant handed over the marked currency to the ASI. As soon as the transaction was made, CBI officials intervened and arrested the officer on the spot. The ASI was then taken into custody and later produced before a special CBI court.

During the hearing, the defense argued that the officer was falsely implicated and that no coercion or threat had been made to the complainant. The prosecution, however, maintained that there was clear evidence including voice recordings, surveillance footage, and the physical recovery of marked cash from the officer’s possession. After hearing both sides, the court decided to grant bail with certain conditions, including surrendering the passport, cooperating in the investigation, and refraining from contacting the complainant.

This incident has raised serious questions about corruption within the law enforcement system, particularly when officials demand bribes in sensitive financial cases. The CBI has reiterated its commitment to maintaining accountability and transparency in public services, encouraging citizens to report any misconduct by government officials.

As the investigation progresses, the accused ASI will remain under close watch by the CBI. The court is expected to hear the next phase of the case in the coming weeks. This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenge to eliminate corruption at all levels of governance.
