Chamoli tragedy: All 11 injured evacuated to AIIMS, 1661 electrocuted in state
Chamoli tragedy, All 11 injured were flown to AIIMS, and 1661 people have been electrocuted in the state since it was formed. Traders across the district, including Gopeshwar, Pipalkoti, Joshimath, Karnprayag and Gochar, kept their establishments closed as a mark of respect to the deceased.
DEHRADUN: After a transformer burst in Namami Gange Project in Chamoli killed 16 people, 11 badly injured individuals were transported to AIIMS Rishikesh from Gopeshwar. Six were dispatched Wednesday night, five on Thursday. Four injured are critical.
Gopeshwar, Pipalkoti, Joshimath, Karnprayag, and Gochar traders stopped their shops to honour the fallen. On Thursday, Chamoli cremated eleven victims on the Alaknanda. Wednesday cremated five. Regional residents came to honour the victims.
“Prima facie investigation has observed that if a high current had passed through the metre, it would have burst, but it is completely safe,” Uttarakhand Power Corporation Director (Operations) M L Prasad told The New Indian Express.
Preliminary investigations have shown no staff fault. “The distribution panel burned down, suggesting a short circuit caused the changeover switch glitch,” Prasad added.
On Thursday, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met Chamoli victims’ relatives in Gopeshwar. Congress workers protested outside the police guest house and sat in. BJP workers also chanted anti-Congress slogans.
Later at Chamoli, Leader of Opposition Yashpal Arya, Manish Khanduri, and MLA Rajendra Bhandari addressed the Chief Minister and sought Rs 25 lakh for victims’ families and a job for one family member. Party members again chanted “Chief Minister go back” at the district hospital gate.
“This is not an accident,” Congress leader Harak Singh Rawat stated. Killers should be arrested. The energy department is with the chief minister, therefore if the situation hurts him, he should quit morally.”
