Call to Make Chandigarh Airport a ‘Point of Call’ for International Flights
Local leaders and MPs urge central government to grant approval for expanding global air connectivity
Chandigarh : A strong demand has resurfaced from the Chandigarh region to grant the city’s international airport the status of a ‘Point of Call’, which would allow more international airlines to operate direct flights to and from the city. The move, supporters argue, is essential for boosting tourism, trade, and global connectivity for the northern region of India.
Currently, Chandigarh International Airport operates a limited number of international flights, with most passengers relying on Delhi or Amritsar for global travel. However, the airport’s infrastructure is well-equipped, and officials say it is underutilized. Granting ‘Point of Call’ status would enable foreign airlines to include Chandigarh as one of their designated destinations under bilateral air service agreements.
Local leaders, including several Members of Parliament (MPs), have raised the issue with the central government and the Ministry of Civil Aviation multiple times. They argue that the tri-city region of Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula has a growing population with increasing international travel needs, especially among NRIs and business travelers.
The demand has also found support from local business associations, trade groups, and travel companies. They highlight that easier international connectivity will not only improve convenience for passengers but also attract investment and strengthen Chandigarh’s position as a regional hub for commerce and tourism.
Despite repeated requests, the matter is still pending with the central authorities. Officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation have cited existing bilateral agreements and traffic assessments as reasons for the delay, but discussions are reportedly ongoing.
Citizens and stakeholders continue to push for the decision, pointing out that the airport already meets international standards and has the capacity to handle more traffic. The runway has been upgraded, and passenger terminals are equipped with modern facilities. The lack of direct international connectivity is seen as a major gap in the region’s infrastructure.
As pressure mounts from elected representatives and civic bodies, the hope is that the central government will soon recognize the strategic importance of Chandigarh International Airport and approve its designation as a ‘Point of Call’. Such a move could unlock new economic opportunities and make international travel more accessible for millions in the northern states.
