New Delhi, April 27: The Bhartiya Janata Party’s Delhi unit said that it has “renamed” South Delhi’s Mohammadpur village as Madhavpuram on Wednesday, even though official clearance from the Delhi Government for the same was yet to arrive. Plaques declaring Mohammadpur village as Madhavpuram were placed in the said village. Delhi BJP Chief Adesh Gupta, along with party leaders, attended the event to ‘rename’ the area. A few locals were also present there. South Delhi Mayor Mukkesh Suryaan, local BJP Councilor and Delhi BJP leaders cited inaction from the Aam Aadmi Party-led state government behind the move, which was pending since December last year. The South Municipal Corporation of Delhi (South MCD) had passed the proposal in the house to rename the Mohammadpur village. It was later sent to Delhi Government to induct the move into state revenue records. However, the AAP Government has not notified it so far. “We had to rename the locality on our own because Delhi Government has shown no interest in bringing down the name which carries the legacy of slavery. Our move was appreciated by the village panchayat and has the full mandate of the locals,” Mayor Mukkesh Suryaan told UNI. Local municipal councilor Bhagat Singh Tokas said the Arvind Kejriwal government, which doesn’t miss a chance to show its nationalism, is not supporting BJP in the cause of the nation’s unity. “The Kejriwal Government can install as many flags as it wants to hide their pseudo nationalism, but the reality is that they don’t support our society to demolish the symbols of slavery. The Mohammadpur name is a living legacy of the slavery enforced upon us,” he added. As per the naming process for roads and villages, the proposal has to be approved by the state naming authority. The Delhi Government has not reacted to the development so far. (UNI)
