The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, which would take the place of the decree the Centre issued on May 19, received approval from the Union Cabinet on Tuesday.

The contentious law was put into effect a week after the Supreme Court gave the elected administration led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal control over all services in Delhi, with the exception of police, public order, and land.

It made it easier to create the National Capital Civil Service Authority (NCCSA), which oversaw the transfer of Group-A officers from the DANICS cadre as well as disciplinary actions against them.

Before the May 11 ruling by the Supreme Court, the lieutenant governor exercised executive control over all transfers and postings of Delhi government employees.

The opposition coalition INDIA, which includes Kejriwal’s AAP, has responded angrily to the order, claiming that the Centre “deceived” the citizens of Delhi.

Along with other opposition parties, the Congress has spoken out against the ordinance.
