Patna: A major political controversy erupted on Friday after the Kerala unit of the Congress shared a post on ‘X’ that read — “Bidis and Bihar start with B.” The post was seen as derogatory towards Bihar and its people. Following massive backlash, the post was deleted.

Union Minister Nityanand Rai launched a scathing attack on the Congress, accusing the party of deliberately humiliating Bihar’s identity and pride.

“Congress and RJD leaders take pleasure in insulting Bihar and Biharis. The people of Bihar will give them a befitting reply. Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav must answer, because this happens at their behest,” said Rai.

The controversial post was originally aimed at criticising the Centre’s recent GST reforms, under which taxes on cigars, cigarettes, and tobacco were increased to 40%, while the tax on bidis was reduced from 28% to 18%. However, dragging Bihar into the post triggered widespread anger.

Political reactions:

Nityanand Rai (Union Minister): Called it “an attack on Bihar’s self-respect.”

Samrat Choudhary (Bihar Deputy CM): Said, “After insulting PM Modi’s mother, Congress has now insulted Bihar. This shows the party’s true character.”

Although the Congress deleted the post, the BJP has made it clear that the issue will not end here and will be raised strongly during upcoming election campaigns.
