In a significant move to honor the legacy of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, the Department of Industries in Lahore has announced plans to develop a Bhagat Singh Gallery at the historic Poonch House. This initiative has been widely welcomed by Imtiaz Rasheed Qureshi, chairman of the Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation in Pakistan, who has long advocated for such a project.

Poonch House, located in Lahore, has a rich history. Built in 1849, it was initially constructed for Lord Lawrence, who commanded Sikh forces during the reign of Maharaja Duleep Singh. Over the years, it has served as the residence of several prominent figures, including Charles Boulnois, a Barrister at Chief Court, and Sir Meredyth Plowden, the Chief Justice of Punjab. In 1962, the building was handed over to the Federal Government of Pakistan.

The decision to transform Poonch House into a Bhagat Singh Heritage Gallery is expected to highlight various aspects of Bhagat Singh’s life, including his education, family background, revolutionary activities, and his time in Lahore’s prison. According to Qureshi, the gallery will play a crucial role in raising awareness about Bhagat Singh’s contributions to India’s freedom struggle.

The total area of the building is 199 square feet, and the gallery will be a vital addition to the growing number of sites dedicated to the revolutionary hero. The development is expected to attract visitors interested in understanding the life and legacy of Bhagat Singh, particularly his connection to Lahore, where he spent significant moments of his life.
