Bengal lad suspected of killing BJP father after TMC wife loses rural polls. Buran lived with his son Biplab and daughter-in-law Sharmila, who lost the gram-panchayat elections to a BJP candidate.
KOLKATA: A youth in West Bengal’s Malda village is accused of murdering his BJP activist father after his wife, a TMC candidate, lost to a saffron candidate in the panchayat elections.
BJP worker Buran Murmu, 52, resided with his son Biplab and daughter-in-law Sharmila. Sunday morning found his dead hanging from his ceiling with multiple injuries. Villagers protested, accusing Trinamool Congress officials of complicity.
After Sharmila lost the gram-panchayat election by 56 votes to a BJP candidate, neighbours told police that the father and son fought. Buran’s son and Trinamool supporters assaulted him after Sharmila’s loss.
Sharmila was arrested and the police are searching for Biplab.
Sharmila’s father has always supported the TMC. Two years ago, she married Kayandighi villager Biplab from Bamangola, Malda. The family conflict began when the local TMC leadership chose her as the party’s gramme panchayat candidate and the homemaker agreed. Biplab supported his wife’s choice. “Buran was an active BJP worker in the area and could not accept that his daughter-in-law would represent and contest for a rival political party,” stated a Malda district police officer.
After the rural poll results and Sharmila’s defeat, Buran and Biplab fought. “Biplab held his father responsible for his wife’s defeat alleging that Buran campaigned against Sharmila asking the family’s neighbours not to vote for her,” the officer quoted a deceased neighbour.
