Bangladesh Shuts Down Over Bulldozer at Durga Temple
Protests erupt on Rath Yatra day; Hindu groups lead demonstrations in cities and universities…..
Dhaka : Widespread protests broke out across Bangladesh on Sunday as Hindu groups and civil society organizations called for a nationwide shutdown in response to the demolition of parts of a Durga temple by municipal authorities. The incident, which occurred just days before the Hindu festival of Rath Yatra, has sparked anger and triggered demonstrations in major cities, including Dhaka, Chattogram, and Khulna.
According to local sources, a bulldozer was used to partially demolish the outer wall and parts of the entrance area of a historic Durga temple in the Brahmanbaria district. Authorities claimed the action was part of an encroachment removal drive. However, Hindu organizations allege it was a targeted move against their religious site.
On Sunday morning, students and members of several Hindu rights groups gathered in large numbers outside universities, including Dhaka University, to protest the demolition. Carrying placards and chanting slogans, the demonstrators demanded immediate restoration of the temple and action against those responsible.
Shops, markets, and public transport in several Hindu-majority neighborhoods remained shut in solidarity with the call for a “Bangladesh Bandh.” Reports also suggest that small processions and sit-ins were held in Sylhet, Rajshahi, and Barisal.
Rath Yatra celebrations, which were scheduled to be held in many temples across the country, were overshadowed by the anger and tension. Organizers in some regions scaled back festivities and focused instead on peaceful demonstrations.
The Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council issued a strong statement condemning the incident, calling it “a direct attack on religious freedom.” They warned of further agitation if the government failed to act swiftly.
Police presence was heightened across sensitive zones to avoid escalation. So far, no reports of violence have emerged. The Ministry of Religious Affairs said they are investigating the matter and will ensure justice is served.
The issue has reignited concerns among minority communities in Bangladesh regarding the protection of their religious sites and the growing instances of vandalism and land disputes involving temples.
As the protest continues, Hindu leaders are planning to meet government officials to push for compensation and guarantees of temple safety.
