CHENNAI: The Asian Champions Trophy, which brings international hockey back to this region of the world, coincided with the inauguration of the first-of-its-kind eco-friendly Poligras Paris GT zero grass at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Friday.

In the presence of the state’s sports minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin, Stalin dedicated the hockey pitch.

Before entering the field among fireworks, the CM also dedicated a few monuments nearby.

Speaking at the event, the CM stated, “I send a very warm greeting to all the participating teams to our beautiful city as the Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023 gets underway soon.

“Our government’s commitment to environmental preservation while simultaneously providing the greatest conditions for our athletes is demonstrated by the department of youth welfare and sports development of Tamil Nadu’s choice of the carbon-zero turf.

“I wish all the teams the best of luck and congratulate all the officials who have tirelessly worked to host a successful tournament.”

The finely crafted zero grass is produced using green energy and is 80% sugarcane. Since the lawn uses less water, it has been created to be environmentally friendly.

“The cherry on the cake is that we are doing so on a carbon-zero turf,” Udhayanidhi added. This demonstrates the state’s dedication to sports and sporting facilities.

We aim to continue assisting and fostering the growth of our state’s youngsters via this project.

The competition begins on August 3 with six teams vying for the top prize: India, South Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Japan, and China.
