Ashwini Dhir’s Son, Jalaj Dhir, Dies in Tragic Car Accident in Mumbai
Director's 18-year-old son killed in high-speed crash; friend arrested for reckless driving under the influence
Mumbai: In a heartbreaking incident, Jalaj Dhir, the 18-year-old son of filmmaker Ashwini Dhir, tragically lost his life in a car accident on November 23, 2024, in Mumbai. Jalaj, who was a BBA student, had invited his friends over to his home in Goregaon for a casual video game session. Afterward, Jalaj and his three friends — Sahil Mendha, Sarth Kaushik, and Jedan Jimmy, all aged 18 — went for a drive in the city.
While driving back after a meal at a restaurant, Sahil, who was behind the wheel, lost control of the vehicle. The car slammed into a divider on the Western Express Highway near the Sahara Star Hotel. Reports suggest that Sahil was driving at an excessive speed of 120-150 km/h and was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
Sahil reportedly became confused about the route, initially taking a left turn and then swerving right. In the process, he lost control of the car and crashed into the divider. Tragically, both Jalaj and his friend Sarth Kaushik were killed in the accident. Another friend, Jedan Jimmy, suffered minor injuries but managed to alert the police.
Jimmy’s statement to the police revealed the reckless speed at which the car was being driven. Sahil Mendha has since been arrested, and his blood samples have been sent for alcohol testing.
Jalaj Dhir had been planning to accompany his father to the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, where Ashwini Dhir’s new film Hisaab Barabar was set to be premiered. The family is devastated by the tragic loss, and Jalaj’s funeral took place on November 24 at their Goregaon home. A prayer meeting was held the following day, attended by several prominent personalities, including producer JD Majethia and actor Rajesh Kumar.
Ashwini Dhir, known for directing films like Son of Sardaar (2012), Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge (2010), and U, Me Aur Hum (2008), was in Goa for the world premiere of his film Hisaab Barabar at IFFI when the accident occurred.
