Hong Kong, Jan 3: Another independent Hong Kong news site Citizen News will be shutting down on January 4 due to the deteriorating conditions of media organizations in the city.
This announcement came days after several senior employees of a media organization, Stand News, were arrested by the Hong Kong authorities. Later, the organization had to pull down its shutters.
“Unfortunately, the major changes in our society in the last two years, and the deteriorating media environment, have made it impossible for us to realize our mission without worries,” CNN quoted Citizens News as saying on its Facebook page.
It further said: “At the center of a brewing storm, we found ourself in a critical situation. In the face of a crisis, we must ensure the safety and well-being of everyone who are on board.”
The organization said its website will no longer be updated from January 4 and will be removed “after a period of time.”
In June, another anti-government newspaper Apple Daily stopped its operations after a series of arrests of its senior executives and police raids in its offices.
The closures and police raids of media outlets followed the National Security Law imposed by China in Hong Kong. According to the law, a person would be charged for four types of offences — separatism, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign countries.
