Amritsar : Several youths from Amritsar, who once wielded assault rifles in the battle-torn city of Krasnohorivka in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, are now back to their civilian lives, armed with tools like wrenches and plungers. These youths, who had left India in search of better opportunities, are now working as plumbers, wallpaper installers, and dairy workers in India, far from the warfront.Amritsar Youths Return Home After Fighting in Ukraine's Warfront
Rohit, 26, from Ajnala, shared that the traumatic experiences in Russia, including harsh winters, bombings, and the constant threat of death, made the challenges of low wages and long hours in India feel insignificant. “It’s better to earn less and stay with family,” he reflected, summarizing his life-changing experience abroad.
These young men, who had been lured by the promise of lucrative pay — including a monthly salary of Rs 1 lakh and a signing bonus of Rs 7 lakh — had never anticipated being thrust onto the frontlines as Army helpers. While serving the Russian military, Rohit witnessed the horrors of war, including deadly drone attacks. After spending up to 10 months in Russia, their return was facilitated by the Indian government following intervention by Prime Minister Modi and Russian President Putin.

Now back in India, many have resumed their former jobs, with some like Jaimal Singh working as a plumber and earning more than before. Despite returning to less financially rewarding roles, the youths are relieved to be home. As Sarbjit Singh and others share their stories, they emphasize the importance of family and safety over financial gain.

This trend of Indian youths, especially Punjabis, working in the Russian Army has drawn significant attention, particularly after the tragic deaths of Indian nationals like Tejpal Singh and the recent injuries to others. The Ministry of External Affairs continues to push for the return of all Indian citizens working in the conflict zone, highlighting the dangers faced by those caught in the crossfire.
