NEW DELHI: Telecom provider Bharti Airtel announced on Monday that customers in Delhi and Mumbai may now use its fixed wireless access (FWA) service, Airtel Xstream AirFiber, using 5G. The FWA service attempts to provide clients with internet connectivity in areas where getting to fibre is difficult. The company intends to roll out its pan-India services gradually.

The second-largest telecom provider in India claimed that during the previous three to four years, demand for home Wi-Fi has dramatically increased. With only 34 million Indian houses having fiber-to-the-home connections, many users have trouble receiving fibre services.

The nation’s first 5G wireless Wi-Fi solution, Airtel Xstream AirFiber, will provide internet access to customers in fiber-deficient areas. It will address the problem of last-mile connection in both rural and urban areas of India where getting access to fibre infrastructure is difficult, according to a news release from the firm.

The plug-and-play Xstream AirFiber device has built-in Wi-Fi 6 technology and can connect up to 64 devices at once. It will provide extensive indoor coverage. There are still parts in India without access to high-speed internet at home because of the logistical difficulties of installing fibre in a country the size of India, according to Shashwat Sharma, Director of Consumer Business for Bharti Airtel.

“While fibre to the home will always be the gold standard for residential Wi-Fi, AirFiber fills in the experience gap for the rest of us. We are thrilled to announce the availability of Xstream AirFiber to users in Delhi and Mumbai today, with a pan-India rollout soon to follow, said Sharma.

The Rs 799 plan, which offers up to 100Mbps speed, enables the customer to utilise the Airtel Xstream AirFiber service. With a one-time refundable security deposit of Rs. 2500, the plan is available for a period of six months. Customers can stroll into specific Airtel stores in Delhi and Mumbai and choose Xstream AirFiber to use the service.
