New Delhi: Following a recent plane crash and increasing operational pressure, Air India has announced a major restructuring of its flight schedule. The national carrier will reduce 118 weekly flights across 19 routes and temporarily suspend services on three others. This decision comes as part of a broader effort to stabilize operations and minimize last-minute disruptions for passengers.

The airline, which has been under scrutiny due to mounting operational challenges and safety concerns, clarified that the cuts primarily affect routes served by smaller aircraft. These are typically Tier-2 and Tier-3 city connections that have lower passenger loads and more frequent technical adjustments.

According to airline officials, the temporary suspension of services on three specific routes has been taken to ensure better aircraft utilization and to streamline maintenance schedules. Although the airline has not publicly disclosed the exact routes affected by the suspension, sources indicate they include short-haul sectors where alternative travel options are available.

An Air India spokesperson stated that the step was necessary to “maintain consistent reliability across our network” and to “enhance passenger confidence” after the recent turbulence in operations. The crash earlier this month had intensified the pressure on the airline to tighten safety, maintenance, and crew readiness protocols.

Aviation analysts say the move, though disruptive in the short term, may benefit the airline in the long run by ensuring punctuality, reducing overburdened schedules, and allowing the airline to focus on high-demand sectors. The reduced frequency is expected to affect daily business travelers and regional commuters the most.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has welcomed the move as a “proactive step” toward network stabilization. The regulator is also reportedly conducting audits of Air India’s fleet and crew performance, especially on routes with repeated complaints of delays or technical glitches.

Passengers booked on the impacted routes have been offered full refunds, rebooking options, or alternate flight schedules. The airline has assured that all updates are being communicated via email, SMS, and its official app.

This announcement underscores the challenges facing India’s legacy airline as it navigates a competitive aviation market, aging fleet concerns, and rising expectations post-privatization. All eyes are now on Air India’s next steps as it aims to regain operational reliability and public trust.
