1612 – East India Company’s Navy eastablished.

1831 – Charles Darwin first met Captain Robert Fitzroy, commander of HMS Beagle, who would be his cabinmate on a the historic five-year expedition (1831-36). During that voyage, Darwin visited the Galapogos Islands which inspired his theory of evolution. Another English naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, biologist and illustrator Arthur R Wallace (RHS) was his contemporary.

1862 – A balloon ascent to a height of 7 miles was made by metereologist James Glaisher and his pilot Henry Tracey Coxwell. Although this was the greatest height then achieved by passengers in a balloon, its precise altitude is unknown because Glaisher lost consciousness and was unable to read the barometer. Death was narrowly avoided by the courageous efforts of the pilot. The height was estimated by extrapolating measurements already recorded on the ascent (pic credit-sciencephotogallery.com).

1793 – In the French Revolution, the “Reign of Terror” begins. (The Reign of Terror (6 September 1793 – 28 July 1794), was a period of violence that occurred after the onset of the French Revolution, incited by conflict between two rival political factions, the Girondins and The Jacobins, and marked by mass executions of “enemies of the revolution”).

1958 – 1st colour video recording on magnetic tape by Apex ans RCA erngineers  in Los zAngeles. The efforts were started earlier in 1951   by John T. Mullin and Wayne R. Johnson’s of  Ampex 200 tape recorder, but in Black and White.

1968 – 21 killed by hijackers aboard a Pan Am jet in Karachi Pakistan.

1972 – 11 Israeli athletes are slain at Munich Olympics by Palestine terrorists. (The Munich massacre was an attack during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, where  11 Israeli Olympic team members were taken hostage and eventually killed, along with a German police officer, by the Palestinian terrorist group Black September. Shortly after the crisis began, they demanded 234 prisoners jailed in Israel and the German-held founders of the Red Army Faction. German neo-Nazis gave the attackers logistical assistance. Police officers killed five of the eight Black September members during a failed rescue attempt).

1986 – In Karachi (Pak)  army storms hijackers  of  U.S. B-747, 19 were  killed.

1988 – The country goes without newspapers on this day as the entire newspaper industry had protested against the Defamation Bill.

1991 – Nelson Mandela was  chosen as President of African National Congress (ANC) after having spent 27 years in prison due to Aparthied  practiced by earlier President  PW Botha govt. and succeeding President F. W. de Klerk  of  British.

1995 – A 30 member Ladakh Autonomous Hill Council sworn-in that was conceded by the Government of India in 1993.

Born…. 1888 – Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishan, President of India. philosopher,  academic and statesman who served as the Vice President of India from 1952 to 1962 and President of India from 1962 to 1967. Earlier he was the ambassador of India to the Soviet Union from 1949 to 1952. He was also the vice-chancellor of Banaras Hindu University from 1939 to 1948 and the vice-chancellor of Andhra University from 1931 to 1936. Radhakrishnan is considered one of the most influential and distinguished 20th century scholars of comparative religion and philosophy,  he held the King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science at the University of Calcutta from 1921 to 1932 and Spalding Chair of Eastern Religion and Ethics at University of Oxford from 1936 to 1952. His birthday declared Teachers Day in 1962.  He was awarded Bharat Ratna in  1954, Knight Bachlor award  from  British  and several other honours.                                                                                                                  Dr. Radhakrishnan’s philosophy was based  in Advaita Vedanta, reinterpreting this tradition for a contemporary understanding.  He defended Hinduism against what he called “uninformed Western criticism”,   contributing to the formation of contemporary Hindu identity.  He was influential in shaping the understanding of Hinduism, in both India and the West, and had  a reputation as a bridge-builder between India and the West  (pic credit-Cecil Stoughton  for commons.wikimedia.org)

1929 – Bob Newhart. American comedian, who produced  two most popular TV  shows Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart and The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back, and more. He won 3 Grammy, 1 Emmy and  a Mark Twain award fr American Humor.  His net worth was $ 656 million in 2024 (pic credit-cheatsheet.com). 

1947 – Dev, Punjabi poet and painter.  Jagraon born poet who  shifted to Switzerland in 1979  has written poems/collections like  Vidroh, Doosre Kinare Di Talash, Matlabi Mitti, Hun Ton Pehchan,  Shabdant, for which he won Sahitya Akedmi Award in 2001 and Shiromani Punjabi Sahitya Pruskar (1992).

1950 – Vitender Kashyap. Indian economist,  politician from  Shimla (H.P.)  Elected to Lok Sabha in 2009 and 2014  on BJP ticket.  Member of  Standing Committees on Water Resources, Food, IT and MPLAD Funds management.

RIP…. 1997 -Mother Teresa [Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu], Albanian born, Indian nun and founder of Missionaries of Charity (Nobel Peace Prize, 1979).

You may have known….The legal age of marriage for women is 18 and 21 for men in the country. However, the government is planning to make it 21 for both men and women.
Around 25 percent of Indian women aged 18-29 have got married before the legal minimum age of marriage of 18 years.
