1752 – The day of 3 Sep never happened in Britain, nor the next 10 dates. The Roman era Julian Calendar, had become 11 days out of step from the Solar cycle. Britain and its American colonies adopted the Gregorian Calendar, which moved this day’s Date — up from Sep 3 to Sep 14.

1940 – Hitler orders invasion on England on Sept 21, Operation-Seelowe. (Following the Fall of France, the Nazis expected the British to seek a peace agreement, and invasion was considered as a last resort. As a precondition, the proposed operation required both air and naval superiority over the English Channel and proposed landing sites, neither of which the Germans ever achieved during the war. Operation Sea Lion (German word Seelowe) was postponed indefinitely on 17 September 1940 and never carried out. The German High Command had no confidence that the plan was feasible, and most historians agree it had little possibility of success).

1967 – Sweden begins driving on right-hand side of road. Today 148 countries s drive on right-had side and 64 countries drive on the left. (In the past, travelling on the right side was the norm because that was the most sensible option for feudal, violent societies. Since most people are right-handed, swordsmen preferred to keep to the left in order to have their right arm nearer to an opponent).

1976 – The unmanned spacecraft Viking II landed on Mars and took the first pictures of the surface of Mars.

1987 – Vishwanathan Anand, 17, becomes India’s first and the world’s youngest Grandmaster.

1994 – Indian government decides to disinvest government holding in 21 Public Sector Units including ITI, IOC and ITDC.

1995 – Ram Jethmalani (lawyer and MP) launches a new party, Bharatiya Lok Panchayat, to rid the country of its evils.

1997 – Indore bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court directs the state government to pay an ex-gratia of Rs. 50,000 to the family of a college student, who had committed suicide following ragging in the hostel.

2013 – Microsoft bought Nokia for $7.2 billion.

Born…. 1905 – Kamlapati Tripathi,  the veteran freedom fighter, writer represented Varanasi in Lok Sabha from 1975-81. He was also Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister during 1969-70. He was Railway Minister and presented Rail budget four times. Was appointed INC President 1983-86.

1923 – Pandit Kishan Maharaj, the legendary tabla player of the country.   Born in Kabir Chaura, Benaras  (Varanasi), he  shared  stage  with legendary musicians Faiyaz Khan, Omkar Nath  Thakur, Girija Devi, Bade Ghalam Ali Khan, Bhimsem Joshi,  Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar  Khan, Vasantrai,  Vilayat Khan  and trainede many  prominent  disciples.  apart from   classical dance legends  Birju  Maharaj, Shambhu Maharaj Sitara Devi etc.  He performed in Edinburgh,  USSR, Switzerland, Poland, Yugoslavia, Czecholslavi  and elsewhere with culture troups. He was  honoured with Padma Shri in 1973 and  Padma Vibhushan in  2002.

1926 – Uttam Kumar, (Arun Kumar Chattopadhyay)  veteran Bengali  and Hindi film  actor, director, singer, screenwriter.  Called Mahanayak  he did several jubilee films like Antony Firangee,  Nayak,  Chowrangee,  Ananda Ashram,  Amanush, Chirakhana, Basu Paribar,  Agni Pariksha, Sagarika, Maya Mriga, Saptapadi, Bipasha, Pratishodh etc. He won 5 National Film and 4  Filmfare awards, BFJA apart from several other honors.

1952 – Shakti Kapoor, veteran Bollywood  actor who has done mostly comic and villain roles. Some of his films (700) are Qurbani, Gunda, Rocky,  Hero, Bhagam Bhag, Andaaz Apna Apna, Raja Babu, Animal, PK  etc.  He was nominated to Filmfare 5 times but won once in 1995  (film Raja Babu)

1940 – Pyarelal, famous composer of Hindi cinema. He paired with Lakshmikant and the due did  750  successful films  viz., Dosti, Milan, Jeene Ki Rah,  Bobby, Amar Akbar Anthony,  Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Sargam, Karz,and scores of songs, Bhajans, Qavalis  etc. They won 7 Filmfares and many nominations.  Their  music albums are estimated to have scaled about Rs. 26  million revenue.

1957 – Sadhguru, (Jagdish ‘Jaggi’  Vasudev),  Shivabhakt, founder and head of the Isha Foundation, based in Coimbatore. The foundation, established in 1992, operates an ashram and yoga centre that carries out educational and spiritual activities. Sadhguru is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Inner Engineering: A Yogi’s Guide to Joy and Karma: A Yogi’s Guide to Crafting Your Destiny, and a frequent speaker at international forums (pic indianews.nz).
1976 – Vivek Oberoi, actor.

1976 – Vivek Oberoi, veteran actor son of  old timer Suresh Oberoi. Acted in Company, Saathiya, Masti, Kaal, Shootout at Lokhandwala, Omkara, Qurbaan etc.  He has also acted in Telugu and Tamil films. He started a  Start-up venture has a worth of about Rs. 1200 crores and does philanthropy for social causes, though a case of misappropriation of public funds us pending against him Mumbai. He has  won  2 Filmfare awards,  StarDust, CNN, Asianet, AXN Action and several other nominatiions

RIP…. Anjan (Lalji Pandey), well known lyricist. Has written about 4000 songs and holds a Guinness Book of Awards for this feat, some of his songs  are very popular, like  Khaike Paan Benataswala, Rote Hue Aate Hain Sasb, etc. for films like Godaan, Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi, Don,  Mukaddar Ka Sikandar, Lawaris, Namak Halal, Saaya, Shola Aur Shabnam etc. he has won 3 Filmfare awards for best lyrics.

2015 – Chandra Bahadur Dangi. He was a Nepali who was the shortest man in recorded history measuring 54.6 cm. He was awarded the title of shortest adult human ever recorded after his height was measured in February 2012.
